What is a yeast infection?
A vaginal yeast infection is a fungal infection that occurs when the balance of microorganisms in the vaginal area is disrupted, leading to an overgrowth of yeast. Normally, the vagina contains a mix of beneficial bacteria and yeast, which helps maintain a healthy environment. However, various factors can disturb this balance, causing an infection.
Common symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Intense itching in and around the vaginal area
- A thick, white, cottage cheese-like vaginal discharge that is typically odorless
- Redness and irritation around the vaginal area
- A burning or stinging sensation, especially during urination or intercourse
