What is Oral Thrush?
Oral thrush, also known as a fungal overgrowth in the mouth, forms creamy white patches in the mouth and on the tongue. Oral thrush can occur more frequently in people who have a weakened immune system, are on certain medications, have diabetes, or use dentures. The main symptom of oral thrush is white patches or lesions in the mouth and on the tongue. The patches can cause pain or a burning sensation and typically bleed if they are scraped away.
Common symptoms
Symptoms may vary from person to person but can include:
- White patches in the mouth
- Lesions in the mouth that can have a cottage cheese appearance
- A white coating on the tongue
- Bleeding or redness if the lesions are scrapped away
- Cracks on the corner of the mouth
- Pain or burning on the tongue and mouth
- Discomfort while eating or drinking
- Cottony feeling in the mouth
- An unpleasant taste in the mouth
