What is malaria?
Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. It's most prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is characterized by symptoms, such as fever, chills, and flu-like illness. Without prompt and effective treatment, malaria can become severe and lead to complications like organ failure or death. Treatment for malaria typically involves antimalarial medications.
Common symptoms
Symptoms of malaria may include:
- Fever
- Chills
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle pain and fatigue
- Cough, chest pain, and breathing difficulties (in some cases)
- Rapid breathing and heart rate
- Diarrhea (occasionally)
