Cracks on the corner of lips, also known as angular cheilitis, is a common condition where the corners of the lips become inflamed and cause dry, irritated, or cracked skin in one or both corners of the mouth. The corners of the mouth can become painful and bleed. Angular cheilitis can be caused by various factors, such as inconsistent oral hygiene, dentures that do not fit properly, fungal infections, nutritional deficiencies, or dry mouth.
Common symptoms
Symptoms may include:
- Pain and tenderness at the corners of the mouth
- Redness, swelling, and irritation of the affected skin
- Cracking, sores, and irritation at the corners of the mouth
- Dry, flaky, or scaly skin at the corners of the mouth
- Formation of crusts and oozing of clear or yellowish fluid as sores heal
